Charles John Vaughan was headmaster for only a few years before resigning to accept the bishopric of Rochester, from which he withdrew without taking office. However, recent research has suggested that he may have been forced out by the threat of the revelation of a homosexual affair - but this is disputed. A Harrow Heritage Trust plaque can be seen just by the entrance pathway.

 

The Library is an English Heritage listed building designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott, a leading architect in the Gothic revival in architecture, and was built between 1861 and 1863. 

 

 

This tiny downward-sliding alley is named after one of the lasting characters created by Anthony Trollope and given life in a wonderful TV series starring Alan Rickman as the oleaginous clergyman.
