Across West Street...
  • Just past the Green turn left down Waldron Road

  • At the junction with Crown Street turn left and cross over…

  • Look out for the small passageway leading down a set of steps to Victoria Terrace

  • Turn right along Victoria Terrace until you reach West Street

  • Turn left and cross the  road towards the old Parish Hall building shown opposite and dated 1884…

  • Just to the right of this Victorian red-brick building is a small signposted passageway leading to ’The Hill and Harrow’….  ///spoon.maybe.hats

A medieval route known as the ‘Old Village Way’ cascaded down the hill’s western flank away from the beginnings of the High Street to meet the flatter land below. Only a small section of this medieval building line, survives today - which would have been located to the rear of West Street. This would explain the siting of one of the earliest properties within the village - the Pye House.

The remains of this building stand in a yard at the rear of 75 West Street, and derived its name from ‘pied poudres', which is French for dusty feet, a name which may reflect the area’s market town roots, which regularly saw travellers to and from the hill.

  • Take this passageway and follow the path across Church Fields - an open area below the hill…

  • This leads into an alleyway with St Anselm’s Primary School and Church on your right...    ///spoon.maybe.hats

  • Cross over Roxburgh Road and into another alleyway which leads back into the Grove Open Space

  •  Walk down to London Road and the Station and the end of this walk is facing you.   ///finely.tubes.urban
