According to the private plaque on the building shown opposite Matthew Arnold (1822 – 1888) lived here. Arnold was the son of Thomas Arnold, the famous headmaster of Rugby School. He had studied at Balliol College, Oxford University.
In 1844, following his degree, he returned to Rugby as a teacher of classics. After marrying in 1851, Arnold began work as a government school inspector, a gruelling job involving travel all over Britain and the Continent. Throughout his thirty-five years in this position, he developed a real interest in education, which fed into both his critical works and his poetry.
Today his essays are more widely known than his poetry. In both, he tried to establish the truths of Christianity, despite his own religious doubts.
